Scandinavian Scientists Develop Textile That Fixes Its Own Tears

A self-healing raincoat? It sounds like something out of a comic book, a group of Scandinavian researchers working for the EU project Safe@Sea have been developing a new type of textile coating that automatically seals tears on the surface of waterproof workwear. The goal is to create a new generation of “intelligent” clothing for professional fishermen. Working with the plastic material polyurethane, scientists have added micro-capsules containing a liquid sealant to the coating of the fabric. When the coating tears, the capsules burst and release the sealant, which hardens when it comes in contact with water and air.

Greenpeace Protests Brazilian Leather and Amazon Deforestation at Italian Trade Show

Greenpeace members rallied last week in Italy to protest Brazilian leather and the mass deforestation it has been causing in the Amazon. The Greenpeacers dressed up in bark-like sustainable materials and stood outside of the Linea Pelle leather trade show in Bologna to raise awareness for the issue, holding signs that said “Save Your Skin” or “Save Your Leather,” depending on how the Italian word “pelle” is translated. Cattle ranching (which supplies leather makers with the hides they need) is responsible for 80 percent of deforestation in Brazil, and Greenpeace is hoping that the ruckus they’re making will put an end to that.

Few designers can bring a live mariachi band to New York Fashion Week and make it work – but that’s exactly what Mara Hoffman did for her lively Spring 2012 collection. Called “Mexican Mamas,” the sultry show was inspired by the women of Mexico, in particular, painter Frida Kahlo. Even though the feel was totally south of the border, the beautiful custom-designed silk prints were manufactured in the good old U.S. of A. BBC confirmed that the dress was indeed designed by Sarah Burton, long-time assistant to Alexander McQueen and current creative director at McQueen.
