Black Current, an all-electric custom-made Volkswagen Beetle has created a record by winning the quarter mile event within ten seconds, thereby creating a new world record. Well, it would be impossible for you to see the speedometer hand touching the 60 mph mark as it all happens in just 1.6 seconds. This zero-emission custom vehicle is powered by as many as 60 12-volt motorcycle batteries.

Designed and built by two brothers, Sam and Olly Young, the Black Current looks exactly like a Beetle itself. This car has also brought the Zero Emissions category award at the Alternative Energy Racing tournament to Sam and Olly Young. While the 30-year-old Sam is a driver, the designer is his elder brother Olly Young, 34. They are sponsored by a local pub in Hungerford of Berkshire. Notably, these guys have been preparing electric cars for the past eight years at their workshop in Hungerford and after a number of attempts, they have emerged successful. (Read more...)

With the growing trend of eco-awareness in China, architecture among other things is also getting immediate impetus towards more and more sustainable methods and designs. One such developer Nanjing Landsea Property Group ‘s green and sustainable building concepts and its use of environmental technologies is quite popular and is recognized with a high degree of credit for growing eco-awareness in building techniques. Currently the group has initiated an Eco-housing project designed by BDP architects.

One of Europe’s celebrated design house of architects and engineers BDP, has designed the Nanjing housing project with prime focus on a low energy use with green design philosophy and totally at par with international standards. The low carbon and sustainable apartment building harnesses natural elements to its maximum capacity with full considerations for local Chinese lifestyle and living standards. Keeping in mind Chinese culture of extensive families and elaborate style of dining and cooking habits the design of homes were accommodated with shared double height additional outdoor space for cooking, a general planning to lodge larger families, traditional south-east facing balconies and roof level communal gardens. The full height louvered triple paned balconies bring s into play the green house effect of passive solar rays that serve as a natural heater in winter for the apartment as well as facilitating a winter garden in the balcony. In summer the windows are to be let open to allow free cross flowing ventilation for natural air conditioning.

The design outlines aesthetic rainwater-harvesting collectors which also act as semi-open tai-chi decks to help entertaining facilities and interaction amongst neighbors in the apartment. (Read more...)
